Dementia Assessment

Serious forgetfulness, mood swings, and other behavioral changes are NOT a normal part of aging. They may be caused by poor diet, lack of sleep, or too many medications. These problems are serious and should be treated and can often be reversed. A lot of people experience memory lapses. Some memory problems are serious and others are not. People who have significant changes in their memory, personality, and behavior may suffer from a form of brain disease called dementia. Dementia seriously affects a personís ability to carry out activities.

The term DEMENTIA describes a group of symptoms that are caused by changes in brain function. Dementia symptoms may include:
  • asking the same questions repeatedly
  • becoming lost in familiar places
  • being unable to follow directions
  • getting disoriented about time, people, and places
  • neglecting personal safety, hygiene, and nutrition
People with dementia lose their abilities at different rates, as dementia is caused by many different conditions. Some can be reversed and others cannot. Additionally, sometimes older people have emotional problems that can be mistaken for dementia. Feeling sad, lonely, worried, or bored may be more common in older people facing retirement or coping with the death of a spouse. Adapting to these changes leaves some people feeling confused or forgetful. Therefore, it is important to receive a thorough evaluation, including a neuropsychological evaluation, to aid in determining the cause of symptoms since depression in older adults can mimic dementia.

People who show signs of dementia should be evaluated by their doctor, in addition to receiving a thorough physical, neurological, psychiatric, and neuropsychological evaluation. The neuropsychological evaluation consists of a series of tests that assess different areas of mental functioning such as memory, attention, and concentration. The neuropsychologist may ask you to remember a short story, say the meaning of words, or memorize and recall designs. We work closely with your medical doctor to ensure you receive multi-disciplinary care. Your options are presented to you based on the neuropsychological findings and history of medical care so that you can make an informed decision for you or a loved one.
