Grief and Loss

Grief is a reaction we experience when there has been a loss. The loss can be the death of a loved one, a friend, pet, the end of a relationship, a job, or even a change in life (e.g., retirement). Everyone experiences grief and loss, however, many individuals differ in the process of grief they experience. Individuals experiencing grief from a loss may choose to react in a number of ways and no two people will respond to the same loss in the same way. Therefore, it is important to remember that there is no “correct” way to grieve or mourn a loss. However, there are 5 stages of grief that have been identified by psychologist Dr. Kubler-Ross. These stages of grief reflect the reactions many individuals experience as they realize the emotional affect this loss has had on them. The stages include:
  • Denial, numbness and shock
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance
Not everyone experiences all five stages and may experience them in differing sequences. While there is no “correct” way to grieve a loss, there are factors that may hinder the healing process including avoidance of emotions, the use of alcohol/drugs to self-medicate as an attempt to numb feelings, and over-working to avoid feelings. When the healing process becomes too overwhelming, individual psychotherapy can be useful in coping with your loss. Oftentimes those who are grieving feel misunderstood or guilty about asking for the support they need from friends and family. Individual psychotherapy provides a safe environment for the individual to express thoughts, feelings, and receive the support they need for healing to occur.
