Infidelity

Couples therapy can also address issues of infidelity. In addressing infidelity, the individuals are encouraged to look honestly at themselves and their partner and acquire the skills you need to see yourself through this crisis. Many relevant questions that may arise include:
  • “What constitutes an affair?”
  • “Must an affair involve intercourse?”
  • “Does a kiss or lunch constitute an affair?”
  • “Does an on-line relationship count as cheating?”
  • “What did I do to cause this affair?”
  • “Can I ever trust my partner again?”
The answers to these questions depend on you and what is important to you.

It may help to know that you are not alone. Statistics vary widely on infidelity, but according to one recent study, as many as 37% of married men and 20% of married woman may have been unfaithful. This is likely a conservative estimate given that not many individuals readily admit to an affair. But even by the most conservative estimates, we can say with some confidence that, in the United States, 1 in every 2.7 couples — some 20 million people — are affected at some time by infidelity.

Once an affair has occurred many couples ask themselves, “Can we survive infidelity?” While the answer to this question varies upon the individuals, couples therapy can help you and your partner work through this crisis. Often times, there have been significant couples issues that have not been addressed and have been allowed to fester for some time, creating a considerable emotional divide between partners. Working to repair not only the breach of trust but this emotional divide is essential in recreating a lasting and fulfilling bond. While infidelity can lead to considerable distress in the relationship, it does not have to mean the end.
