Testing for Learning Disability

Learning disabilities are diagnosed when an individual’s achievement on various tasks in reading, writing or math are substantially below what is expected for that person’s age, schooling, and level of intelligence. It is a neurological disorder that affects different cognitive processes and can manifest with problems in reading, writing, spelling, listening, speaking, thinking, or mathematics. There are several kinds of specific learning disabilities:
  • Dyslexia – problems with reading, spelling and writing (e.g., transposing letters or numbers)
  • Aphasia – problems with processing, speaking, or understanding language
  • Dyscalculia – problems with mathematical computations and concepts
  • Dysgraphia – problems with handwriting, spelling, and fine motor tasks
  • Dyspraxia – problems with gross motor tasks (e.g., walking) or fine motor tasks (e.g., handling a pencil for writing or drawing)
  • Visual Processing – problems with understanding information through visual mediums
  • Auditory Processing – problems with understanding information through auditory (i.e., hearing) mediums
  • Short-term and Long-term Memory – problems with encoding and retrieving memories
Learning disabilities are very common and affect 2-10% of students. While a learning disability can create a challenge to learn specific material, it often creates severe issues with failure and low self-esteem that cause social and family difficulties on top of the academic or work problems. Many famous and successful persons have learning disabilities including Albert Einstein and Winston Churchill, so the challenge often is to overcome the learning deficit by finding the person’s strengths. Teaching toward the individual’s strengths empowers the individual and fosters confidence and motivation so that the learning disability does not color the person’s view of the world and affect their outlook on their potential for success. Learning disabilities, however, if left untreated can lead to significant psychological problems including:
  • Demoralization
  • Depression
  • Poor social skills
  • Low self-esteem
  • Drugs and alcohol abuse
In fact, almost 40% of individuals with a learning disability drop out of school. Our trained doctors are skilled at identifying the root of the academic or work problem to ascertain the presence of a specific learning disability. Testing provides the ability to accurately diagnosis the problem and offers targeted interventions to promote the individual and guide them onto a road toward success. Recommendations include:
  • Educational strategies
  • Academic placement and remediation
  • Accommodations for exams (FCAT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, Bar exam)

    - Extra time (50%, 100%, etc.)
    - Use of computer or calculator
    - Private room

  • Speech/language and occupational therapy
  • Individual and/or family counseling
  • Behavior management
  • Self-esteem building
